Cold-drawn deep-drawn stainless steel sheet metal forming parts

Deep painted stainless steel: how it works

Through deep drawing, stainless steel can be used to produce strong corrosion-resistant parts, from fuel tanks to kitchen sinks. The process of deep drawing stainless steel involves applying pressure to stretch the flat material onto the form of the mold. Depending on the depth and width of the drawing, certain parts must undergo a series of stretches to reach the required specifications. A standard "pot" or "pot" shaped part can be easily drawn 5 inches deep. In order to paint deeper, an in-process Anneel is needed to eliminate the hardening of the work. Stainless steel is usually painted deep at room temperature, the so-called cold working process. It will work hard at room temperature, but it can be heat treated later to increase its strength.

Two types of stainless steel can form deep-drawn parts: 400 series (ferroalloy group) and 300 series (celestial body group). 300 series metals are particularly suitable for deep-drawing due to their high nickel alloy content. Nickel gives them ductility and super corrosion resistance without compromising strength. 304 DDQ (deep drawing quality), 304 EDD (extra deep drawing quality) and 316 stainless steel are the best choices for applications that require strict draws.

Challenges associated with deep drawing to form stainless steel

Due to the uniqueness of stainless steel, special treatment is required in the deep drawing process. First of all, stainless steel hardens faster than carbon steel. Therefore, it needs nearly twice the pressure to stretch and form. It is important to customize the type of material for this pressure to prevent breakage or timidity. Secondly, the chromium oxide surface film (to prevent corrosion) of stainless steel will increase friction during the deep drawing process, which means that it must be carefully coated and lubricated to minimize wear costs. Finally, the speed of deep drawing stainless steel must be optimized to take into account factors such as high friction, high pressure, and deep drawing force. Failure to calibrate the speed correctly may result in breakage or wrinkles. Generally speaking, the more serious the tie, the slower the speed required.

Many metal stamping companies and tool shops, especially those that mainly use carbon steel, found that their standard processes did not produce sufficient results for stainless steel parts. Customers should be careful to work with deep-drawing suppliers who often produce high-quality parts from stainless steel.
